Body damage does NOT disqualify your car from donation in the Fort Myers area. If your vehicle has dents from a fender-bender on Colonial Boulevard, rust from years by the Caloosahatchee, a cracked windshield from I-75 debris, or even serious storm damage after a Gulf Coast hurricane, you can still donate it through Sunshine Shift. We accept cars in any cosmetic condition and arrange free towing, whether it’s parked in a McGregor driveway, a Lehigh Acres side yard, or a condo lot near Gulf Coast Town Center.
Here’s how it works in Florida: you submit your vehicle info, we schedule a free pickup anywhere in the Fort Myers area (including Cape Coral, North Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, and Estero), and our licensed auction or salvage partners sell the car as-is. The donation value is based on the actual sale proceeds, not how the body looks. Heavier body or accident damage may mean a lower sale price and therefore a lower deduction, but you’ll still receive a written tax receipt with a minimum claimed value of $500. If it sells for more, you can deduct that higher amount using IRS Form 1098-C. No repairs are required, and your gift supports Heritage for the Blind’s services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
Tell us about your damaged vehicle
Start by sharing your car’s basic details and the type of body damage it has—dents, rust, cracked glass, accident or storm damage. Whether it’s sitting in Gateway, San Carlos Park, or downtown Fort Myers, just be honest about its condition so we can match it with the right buyer or salvage channel.
Schedule your free Fort Myers pickup
We’ll arrange a free tow anywhere in the Fort Myers area, running or not. Driveway, street, or apartment lot near Cypress Lake or Whiskey Creek—just tell us where the car is. Our towing partner contacts you to set a pickup time that works around your schedule.
Sign over the title at pickup
When the tow truck arrives, you’ll sign the Florida title and a simple release form. Even with hail dents, crumpled panels, or a smashed bumper, the vehicle is taken as-is. The driver provides a preliminary receipt showing that Sunshine Shift received your donation for Heritage for the Blind.
We sell your car as-is for the best return
After pickup, your damaged vehicle is sent to auction or a licensed salvage buyer. Cosmetic and structural damage may reduce the final sale price, but our goal is to secure the strongest return possible from the Fort Myers market and beyond, without you spending anything on repairs or storage.
Receive your IRS-ready tax receipt
Once the vehicle sells, we mail you a tax receipt. You can claim at least $500; if the car sells for more than $500, your deduction equals the sale price and we’ll issue the documentation you need, such as IRS Form 1098-C. You’re done—no towing fees, no repair bills, just a completed donation.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged Florida title
Tip: Even if your car’s body is beat up, the title paperwork still matters. If the title is lost, damaged, or shows an old address, let us know before pickup. We’ll guide you through the Florida replacement or correction process so the tow doesn’t get delayed and your donation stays on track.
Car blocked in or unsafe to move
Tip: Heavily damaged or storm-flooded cars might be stuck behind other vehicles, flat tires, or debris. Tell us if access is tight, like in a crowded Cape Coral condo lot or narrow Fort Myers Beach driveway. We can dispatch a truck with the right equipment so the driver can safely load your vehicle as-is.
Existing insurance or plate responsibilities
Tip: Dents and accident damage don’t stop your donation, but you’re still responsible for canceling or adjusting insurance and handling your Florida plate. After the title is signed over, talk to your insurer and follow Florida DHSMV guidelines on plates to avoid paying for coverage you no longer need.
Unclear expectations about tax deduction amount
Tip: Extensive body or frame damage can lower the sale price, which lowers the potential deduction. You’re guaranteed a receipt for at least $500 of claimed value, but amounts above that depend on actual sale proceeds. We’ll clearly document the final sale so you can file accurately with your tax preparer.
