As long as you have a valid title in your name, we can usually complete the donation, send a free tow truck to your driveway, and provide a tax receipt that may help you at tax time.
Here’s how it works in Florida: for a donation, what matters is clear ownership, not current registration. When you donate, you sign your Florida title over to Sunshine Shift, and our licensed transport partner picks up the vehicle anywhere in the Fort Myers Area—whether you’re in Cape Coral, Lehigh Acres, Gateway, North Fort Myers, or near McGregor Boulevard. The car does not need to be driven; towing is included at no cost to you. Once picked up, responsibility for the vehicle shifts away from you. You should then notify the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or your local Lee County Tax Collector that you’ve transferred the vehicle, so you’re not on the hook for future tickets or fees.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have your Florida title in your name
Locate your Florida vehicle title and confirm your name matches your ID. It’s okay if the registration is expired and the plate is off or suspended. What we need for Sunshine Shift is a clear, signed title. If there’s a lien listed that’s been paid off, make sure you have the release paperwork or lien stamp before scheduling pickup.
2. Tell us about the car and the expired registration
Go online or call Sunshine Shift and share basic details: year, make, model, approximate condition, and that the registration has expired. Let us know if it’s parked at your home, in a condo lot near Downtown Fort Myers, or at a shop in Cape Coral. We’ll quickly confirm eligibility and schedule free towing, usually within a few days.
3. Schedule free pickup anywhere in the Fort Myers Area
Pick a day and time window that works for you. Our towing partner meets you at the vehicle—whether that’s in Lehigh Acres, San Carlos Park, Iona, or North Fort Myers. The car does not need to run, and you do not need current tags. The driver will walk you through signing the title over to Sunshine Shift correctly.
4. Hand over the title, remove your belongings and plates
Before the tow truck arrives, clear personal items from the car and remove your license plate if Florida still requires you to return or transfer it. At pickup, you’ll sign the title to Sunshine Shift, give the driver the keys if you have them, and keep a copy of the pickup documentation for your records and insurance.
5. We finalize the donation and send your tax receipt
Once the vehicle is sold or otherwise processed, Sunshine Shift mails or emails you a tax acknowledgment. In most cases, you can claim at least a $500 deduction; higher values use IRS Form 1098-C. Proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired nationwide.
6. Notify Florida DHSMV so you’re fully off the hook
After pickup, file a notice of sale/transfer with the Florida DHSMV or the Lee County Tax Collector. This step lets the state know the vehicle no longer belongs to you, protecting you from future tolls, tickets, or tax notices tied to that VIN. At that point, your expired-registration headache is officially behind you.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged title, even if registration is expired
Tip: Expired registration is usually fine, but we still need proof of ownership. If your title is lost, damaged, or in a former name, contact the Lee County Tax Collector or DHSMV for a duplicate or updated title before scheduling pickup. Sunshine Shift can guide you on what to request, but only the state can issue the document.
Active lien still listed on the Florida title
Tip: If your title shows a lienholder and they haven’t officially released it, we generally can’t complete the donation yet, even if the car is paid off and unregistered. Locate your lien release letter or stamped title, or call the lender to clear the lien with DHSMV. Once the title is clear, Sunshine Shift can move forward quickly.
Vehicle stored in a gated community or tight parking
Tip: Tow trucks need safe access. If your car with expired tags is tucked into a tight carport in McGregor, a gated condo near the River District, or a crowded apartment lot in Gateway, let us know. We’ll coordinate gate codes, parking rules, and any HOA requirements so the driver can load the vehicle without delays or extra hassle.
Not filing a notice of sale after you donate
Tip: Once Sunshine Shift tows the car away, it feels done—but the state still shows you as the last owner until you report the transfer. File a notice of sale with Florida DHSMV or Lee County Tax Collector to protect yourself from future tolls, red-light camera tickets, or tax notices tied to your old, expired-registration vehicle.
