Confirm the Florida rule

Surrender or transfer the plate
If you are putting another vehicle on the road, ask the Florida DMV or tax collector about transferring the plate to that vehicle. If you are not transferring it, surrender the plate through an accepted Florida channel. That may be a driver license office, tax collector office, or authorized tag office. Bring identification and any registration paperwork you have.
Keep your surrender receipt
Ask for written proof that the plate was surrendered. Keep the surrender receipt with your donation paperwork. This receipt is your proof for canceling the registration. It is also sometimes required before an insurer will allow penalty-free insurance cancellation. Do not rely on a phone call alone. Save a photo or scan in case the paper copy is misplaced.
File the transfer notice

Have your donation records, title information, pickup paperwork, and odometer details if they appear on your documents. Do this as a separate task from surrendering plates. Keep a copy with your plate surrender receipt and insurance notes.
If the car already left
If the tow already happened and the plate was still on the vehicle, act quickly but keep the steps simple. Contact Sunshine Shift and ask whether the plate can be recovered from the vehicle record. If it cannot be recovered, contact the Florida DMV or your county tax collector for the correct plate-surrender or lost-plate instruction. Then call your insurer and ask what proof they need before canceling coverage. Do not cancel insurance based only on the donation receipt if your insurer asks for plate proof. Keep notes, dates, and names with your donation file.
