How the car donation process works
Start with the title you have
If you have a clean title in your name, the donation process is usually simple. Schedule your Sunshine Shift pickup in the Fort Myers Area, keep the title handy, and do not sign it until you are ready for the handoff unless instructed. The tow driver will bring the donation paperwork and show you where the title is signed over to Heritage for the Blind. This helps document the transfer clearly and lets the towing process move quickly, whether the vehicle runs or has been sitting in a driveway, condo lot, marina storage area, or repair shop.
If the title is lost, call before you worry
A lost title does not automatically mean you cannot donate. Heritage for the Blind can help you navigate your state’s replacement-title process and explain what information may be needed, such as the vehicle identification number, your current name and address, and proof that you are the owner. In some cases, vehicles without titles can still be considered, depending on the vehicle, state rules, and available documentation. The best next step is to contact Sunshine Shift before pickup so the team can review your situation and avoid delays on towing day.
Clear any lien before donation
If a bank, credit union, finance company, or other lender is listed on the title, the lien must be satisfied before the vehicle can be donated. That usually means paying off the balance and asking the lender to release the title or provide acceptable lien-release documentation. If you are not sure whether an old lien is still active, call the lender listed on the title before scheduling pickup. Sunshine Shift can explain what to look for, but the lender must release its interest before the title can be signed over to Heritage for the Blind.
Handle names carefully, especially inherited vehicles
The name on the title matters. If the car is titled to a spouse, parent, relative, business, or another person, additional authorization may be required before donation. When the title is in the name of a deceased spouse or parent, the needed paperwork depends on the state and the estate situation; probate documents, a small-estate affidavit, or an affidavit of heirship may be required. Do not guess or sign someone else’s name. Call Sunshine Shift first, explain whose name appears on the title, and the team will help you identify the likely next step.
Sign over the title at pickup
On pickup day, the driver will arrive at the Fort Myers Area location you choose, bring the paperwork, and collect the vehicle at no cost to you. You will sign the title over to Heritage for the Blind as instructed, and the driver will handle the vehicle removal. Foreign-state titles are commonly accepted, so a title from another state does not automatically create a problem. After the title handoff, donors typically do not need a separate DMV visit, though Sunshine Shift can tell you if any state-specific follow-up is recommended for your records.
Keep your tax records
After donation, keep copies of the paperwork you receive for your personal records. Heritage for the Blind is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 58-2164446, and eligible vehicle donations may be tax-deductible if you itemize and meet IRS requirements. For vehicles that sell for more than $500, IRS Form 1098-C is provided. Sunshine Shift cannot give tax advice, so ask a tax professional how the deduction applies to your situation. The important part is that your title transfer, towing paperwork, and donation records are handled clearly from the start.
